Preserving Gig Harbor’s Maritime Legacy Honoring the past, sailing into the future

Honoring the past, sailing into the future

By Julia Runyan, Managing Broker/Owner - RE/MAX Exclusive

Welcome aboard. I’m Julia Runyan with The Runyan Group. Recently, I had the privilege of taking a look at Gig Harbor’s rich maritime heritage. I explored commercial fishing traditions, the craft of boatbuilding, and the efforts to keep these industries thriving for future generations. There’s something truly inspiring about a community connected to its waters—where heritage, hard work, and passion come together to shape the future. Live Inspired.

Gig Harbor’s Fishing Heritage

Gig Harbor’s history is anchored in its fishing industry. Since the early 1900s, net sheds have lined the waterfront, providing essential storage for gear and supporting generations of fishermen. Today, vessels like the Sea Fury, captained by Gregg Lovrovich, continue to honor this legacy by bringing fresh catches from Puget Sound and Alaska to local markets.

“The Sea Fury is a vital part of the local fishing industry, venturing out into the waters of Alaska and Puget Sound to bring fresh catches of the day,” says Lovrovich. Docked at the Lovrovich net shed, this historic vessel serves as a reminder of the resilience of Gig Harbor’s fishing heritage.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The future of Gig Harbor’s maritime culture is in the hands of programs like Crew School, which trains young crew members in vessel operation, maintenance, and the responsibilities of life at sea. I was honored to sponsor Crew School last year and will proudly do so again this year. Attendees come from all over—even internationally—to participate in this unique program.

“We are providing community access to hands-on working waterfront activities,” says Guy Hoppen, Executive Director of the Gig Harbor BoatShop. “It’s about preserving and passing traditions on to the next generation.”

The Gig Harbor BoatShop, located at the historic Eddon Boatyard, plays a crucial role in ensuring the survival of these traditions. Their board and staff continue to invest in programs that give people the opportunity to engage in hands-on experiences and learn the skills that have defined Gig Harbor for over a century.

Sustaining Gig Harbor’s Maritime Traditions

As someone with deep ties to Gig Harbor, I understand the importance of supporting local industries that sustain our community. Programs like Crew School and organizations like the Gig Harbor BoatShop ensure that the knowledge and traditions of our working waterfront continue to thrive.

My journey documenting Gig Harbor’s waterfront culture has been incredibly rewarding. This town is more than just a beautiful harbor—it’s a community built on hard work, history, and passion. As I continue to support these efforts, one thing remains clear: Gig Harbor’s maritime spirit will endure for generations to come.
