Discover local art and meet the makers
By Elizabeth Ray
The Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour, an artistic tradition that has flourished for over three decades, captivates art lovers and the local community. Founded in 1993 by a group of dedicated Gig Harbor artists and craftspeople, the tour was born out of a desire to offer the public a unique glimpse into the creative process. This year, the free event, led by President Lea Basile-Lazarus, celebrates its 31st consecutive year, with 44 artists showcasing their work across 25 destinations.
Visitors to this year’s tour can expect a rich tapestry of art forms to explore, ranging from stone sculptures and watercolor paintings to ceramics, jewelry, woodworking, and much more. The diversity of mediums reflects the vibrant creativity thriving in Gig Harbor. While many artists will demonstrate their craft during the tour, those who share studio spaces might not have the opportunity to do so. However, all are eager to engage with visitors, sharing their techniques, inspirations, and the stories behind their work.
The Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour serves as an artistic showcase and educational platform, offering the community a chance to witness the intricacies of artistic creation. "We screen our artists so that all are accomplished and knowledgeable in what they do," says Basile-Lazarus, highlighting the tour’s commitment to quality and expertise. This focus on education extends to visitors of all ages, particularly children, who might otherwise lack exposure to the arts due to diminishing funding for arts education in schools.
Participating in the tour offers numerous benefits to artists and the community, including a unique once-a-year opportunity to acquire art. Artists can share their processes, educate visitors about their craft, sell their work, and promote the vibrant artistic community of Gig Harbor. For visitors, the experience is both educational and enriching, offering a deeper appreciation for the arts and the opportunity to meet local artists and support local talent by purchasing original pieces directly from the artists.
Beyond the studios, the Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour invites participants to fully immerse themselves in the charm of the local area. Whether enjoying a picnic in a park, dining at one of Gig Harbor’s fine restaurants, or exploring the waterfront shops, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Out-of-town visitors can easily find accommodations in local hotels and bed and breakfasts, making participating in the event convenient.
This year’s tour is bolstered by the support of local sponsors, including Print Solutions, Land Use and Property Law, Gessel Painting, Remax, Windermere, Penninsula Art League, Anderson Homes, Best Western, and BECU, which serves as the Open Studio Tour partner. Their contributions and a grant from the City of Gig Harbor’s Creative Art Grants Program ensure that the Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour remains a cherished tradition for years to come.
